' THE ROAD TO THE CAPITAL OF ASUKA-FUJIWARA '

The oldest Japanese history ‘Nihon-Shoki’ records the opening of a highway between Naniwa and Asuka in the 21st year of Empress Suiko’s reign (A.D.713). The road written in the history is thought to be the Takenouchi-kaido and Yoko-oji that connects Osaka and Nara today. To commemorete the 1,400th year from the construction of the road, and also the 40 th anniversary of the research section of Asuka-Fujiwara palace site, Asuka Historical Museum organize a special exhibition concerning the roads around the ancient capitai of Asuka-Fujiwara area. Yoko-oji and Yamada-michi were trunk roads running east and west. And three main road for north and south traffic were called the Upper-Road (Kamitsu-mochi), the Middle-Road (Nakatsu-michi), and the Lower-Road (Shimotsu-michi). These roads played very important roles in the ancient history of Japan. And they were used for the standard lines of zoning in the construction of the first capital city of this country.
