Remains of pond on supposed site of Shima-no-miya

The Shima-no-miya is mentioned in historical literature as having originally been a residence of Soga-no-Umako, Later made into an imperial palace occupied for many years by Prince Kusakabe (son of Emperor Tenmu).A handsome pond, with a stone-paved floor, has been excavated in the district of Asuka-mura which bears the name Shimanosho.

I serve at my post
By the eastern cascade gate
But neither yesterday nor today
Was any word of summons sent

Man'yoshu 184

At the Shima court
Lit by the morning sun
Dismally no human sound is heard
How sad to the very core

Man'yoshu 189
